Garagonay National Park (El parque nacional de Garagonay) contains an incredible variety of landscapes in a small area of just 376 km2. This is largely due to the climatic contrasts arising from its sharp relieve (at an altitude of about 1,500 m above sea level), and its orientation between the humid north and the dry south. The central mountains catch the moisture from the trade winds and yield a dense jungle climate in the cooler air, which contrasts with the warmer, sun-baked cliffs near sea level.
The park is known for the beauty of its landscapes, particularly its expanses of forest. There are seven types of forest ecosystem in the park, as well as plant and river ecosystems. More than half of the ancient laurel forests in the Canary Islands are protected within the park limits.
